Phenomenal acting and directing throughout. The structure of mirroring the mother and the girlfriend as a motif is done both subtly and deliberately. Cherry ruins her ex’s wedding, Laura ruins Cherry’s engagement party. Even the title is illustrated as a reflection of the word girlfriends horizontally. The ending also may not be what it seems. Given the humanity developed in the characters of both the father and the son, I doubt they could have celebrated a wedding and a birth within a year of causing Laura’s death. If the son survived his death, why couldn’t the mother? Surely a doctor could revive a recently drowned woman with CPR. And during her recovery, imagine the machinations to make season 2 sizzle.
