It did a nice job of re-casting a story from the past and bringing it into the current times. I think it will sit better with older people who have more perspective and experience so as to understand a main feature in the storyline, and that is Maverick never really getting over Gooseโs death. And that is what you come to understand with age, that there are things in life that are never OK, a person just learns to live with them. I also enjoyed the teaching aspect where Maverick is intent on pushing his students, rather than accepting their ability as โthe best fighter pilotsโ as the pinnacle. A bit of an allegory for the USโs current state of the nation which to me is one that is not concerned with pushing the envelope- seeing what else we got, rather, โwe did it- arenโt we great!โ. That is my take on that particular component. My 11 year old daughter said her favorite character was Phoenix- the young woman- and that just shows you how important it is to see people in film who look like you, doing the dangerous and exciting things that the main characters, โheroesโ are doing. And of course the flying is incredible.
