A film about a deadly meteorite shower that kills anyone of any humanity in a Russian city, leaving the privileged and superficial alive to enjoy a swim in the ocean at the end including the protagonist girl whose stupidity and selfishness leads to the deaths of a number of people including her own father. Turns out he can only redeem himself from an accident earlier in her life that was entirely her fault (but for which she blames him) by burning himself alive during atmospheric reentry. She is more emotionally connected to an elderly couple who ran her over in their car and with whom she spent 30 conscious seconds than her own father who is trying to save her life. Oh - and she convinces her 8 year old step brother to play truant from school in order to climb an unfinished skyscraper with no guardrails and poor structural safety. Later in the film she coerces her disabled friend into entering a burning gas tanker knowing that she has fire related ptsd, makes him row all the way there even though he only has one arm and then later uses his prosthetic arm as a mobile phone while he lies unconscious. Her inexplicable crying fit at the end of her fatherโs life eats up valuable time that he could have otherwise used to access the escape modules knowing that he is burning alive in the atmosphere while she has access to a fire retardant suit. I can only assume that this film is an allegory for the waste of human life, resources and honourable men in the battlefields of Ukraine while the weak, indigent and emotionally indulged elite swim and laugh on the beaches of Vladivostok - their menfolk dying painful deaths to preserve their lifestyle while they laugh and frolic in the surf. If thatโs intentional then I applaud it. Iโve given it two stars to reflect that possibility.
