I mostly liked how descriptive the author was and the consistent inclusion of Gaelic throughout the book but I thought the writing was very lazy in terms of how women are treated. Main character acts so selfishly and carelessly towards women in his life that it made it hard to root for him, and he faces no repercussions for it. The book in general treats female characters poorly. It feels unnecessarily sexualised. Why do we need to know how attractive a bar maid is who’s only in it for one line? All female characters are just there to have sex or be mothers. The Bechdel test isn’t passed.
