The real story of Gene Smith and minimata did not need hollywood embellishment and i wish for once they would not argo or 10 steps to the rail cookie navy diver for dramatic effect a based on true events tale. I met Gene in San Francisco in 1977 when he spoke at the art academy about a year before he passed. Cornell Capa who was a Magnum member was one of my photography teachers spoke highly about Gene and I was not disappointed seeing and hearing the man and being effected by his dedication to tell the story. I find it difficult to see him as a braggart as portrayed in the Life magazine office. What I remember and took away from his talk was a quiet deeply dedicated human being who would not come out of the darkroom until be got what he wanted others to see. Cornell Capa used to drive the concept that a good photograph shows something to be appreciated or something that needed to be changed. Certainly the real Eugene Smith did that and I give cudos to Johnny Depp for showing us man who should be remembered and appreciated who showed the world something that needed to be changed.
