I think that Theodore despite his good intentions for Violet was selfish. He knew that she was battling depression after losing her sister. He knew that she was still grieving the loss. He choose her anyways knowing the whole time that he was unwell also, worst than her, he also knew that at some point he would take his own life. She would've been better off if he had left alone. She didn't deserve to have her heart broken again by having to grieve his death also.
