The poor reviews aren't unfair. While if you don't know the story or characters you might find this an entertaining and modern period piece, it is a disservice to the source material. Particularly in how they chose to write the main character. Johnson does a good job with the script she is given, but it's not Austen's Anne Elliott whom she portrays. Anne Elliott is such a strong, mindful, beautifully written protagonist that the altered portrayal of her, while striving to be modern, comes off almost sexist. She's weak, bitter, consumed by her lost love, and openly mocking of those around her... It's a shame to see.
