What’s with the same spooky piano notes that keep tediously returning throughout with no apparent reason? I watched because it had two gifted actresses, but I suspect it wasn’t close to their first choices of a projects. The family that came forth from the teacher child abuse scandal — though dysfunctional —comes across as well within the range of dysfunction one expects to find when one looks beyond the surface, so the interesting story telling choice is that the Portman character who is visiting the family as research in preparation to playing the mom in a movie ends up being crazier than the wacko mom.
