Someone suggested this movie should follow the Hollywood classic musical cannon to be good. I disagree, the songs and dances were in line with modern, interpretive styles, like trap and hip hop, which naturally do not speak to everyone. For those willing to give the film a chance, you may appreciate how clever some of the transitions may be, or the artistry of some of the scenes, or how some of the lyrics are reminiscent of Lorca or Neruda in simplicity and depth. While the music or acting wasn't perfect it allowed us to see the humanity of the characters. The assumption that this movie is bad because it's unlike Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind in story, music, dancing, or acting, completely misses the values in the film.
