It was overall a good origin story with some great cinematic moments, but the first half hour of the movie is a very clunky series of flashbacks and sci-fi mumbo jumbo. The movie doesn't feel like it really starts until a half hour in.
There is some humor, but so much of it involves Nick Fury and a cat that one is left wanting a bit more from the main character, through no fault of her own, but that of the writers. Then there's a major fight scene as No Doubt's "I'm just a girl" plays. The rhythm of the song does not match the fast paced fight scene we see on screen, so once again it feels clunky.
There was a great backstory for the character and metaphors for female empowerment and all that, but as an MCU movie this felt bland, especially on the heels of Ragnorok and Black Panther. It's not that it's a bad movie per se, but by MCU standards, and considering all the hype around this movie, I expected better.
