Having played most of the AC titles starting with the original, the series has always been one of my favorites. I was eager with anticipation to play Valhalla, as the combination of AC with one of my favorite historic cultures, Vikings, had me sold the moment I heard it was in development.
Rather disappointing, especially when compared to previous titles. In my opinion, Black Flag, Origins, and Odyssey are the shining stars in the series. AC Valhalla seems to fall short on many areas, where after spending well over 100 hours each on the mentioned titles above, I am not even sure If I will finish Valhalla.
Combat is very slow and clunky. enemies often fail to disjoint after dodging, it feels like you are wading through knee high mud when you compare to the fighting in Odyssey.
Exploration feels crippled, searching for treasures takes way too long. The raven does not mark things on sight like the eagle did, leaves you feeling punished by the game devs. Why change everything that worked so well?
The biggest disappointment however, has to be the longboats. After playing Black Flag, every game has seemed to fall short in comparison when it comes to naval combat, but navigating the tiny rivers of AC Valhalla is brutally painful. The boat often becomes stuck with no way to free it.
So far the story is fairly decent, with plenty of humor, but I expected more brutality from vikings, but, I understand the creators not wanting to be too realistic with the darker sides of pillaging.
One positive I can give the game, its aesthetics are breathtakingly beautiful, the landscapes are rich and vibrant and with a nice PC setup you will be taken back by the viewpoints.
All in all, I would not recommend this title for new players of the series, get Odyssey instead. For veterans, I would recommend with strong caution, maybe wait for a substantial patch or sale.
