I agree with most of the really bad reviews about this show. It was very difficult to connect with the protagonist. She came across as very prideful. I'm not sure what the director was attempting to do? Perhaps it was an attempt to show that a young woman who was "raised" by a narcissistic mother and an absent father would truly have no idea what to do in a situation like this. Who would she learn from? She makes poor decision after poor decision. She seems to resent those who try to help her if they are not poor. It portrays Alex as having no self esteem as well as no emotional intelligence, and this seems to be the point. Maybe we are not supposed to like her?
She seems to care about others who she sees as most like herself, including her daughter. Alex is lucky enough to meet people who help her. My main take away from this series, is that if you are lucky enough to come into contact with people who will help you, especially rich ones, then you might just have a chance. Perhaps too, it might expose some viewers to the fact that there ARE people who are truly in need out there, despite it's terribly unrealistic and uninspiring story line. Hopefully too, viewers would be sympathetic to those living on the fringes of life who are not young pretty white women.
