I only nerd out for one thing in life and that’s halo lore. I’ve been playing the games for over 20 years and I’ve read a majority of the novels.
I was excited that after years of failed attempts, halo was receiving a proper live action piece (not including past live action shorts). My expectations dropped pretty bad when the producers stated that they didn’t pay much attention to the games or novels and that the show would not be canon.
Now I understand some artistic liberty is needed for adaptation but this show isn’t even halo related. None of the stories from the books or novels is even slightly relevant to this show, other than character names and fighting aliens. There are so many different stories they could have picked and had plenty of freedom to work with and still be canon. In order to follow the first episode, you have to disregard ALL the games and novels, which boils the show down to just a mediocre sci-fi show that steal character names and a title from one of the sagas created. This show is NOT made for hardcore fans.
The first episode is also plagued with writing inconsistencies, uninteresting side characters, bad practical effects, race bending, and woke politics.
Chief is made to seem like an emotionally unstable PTSD patient who is easily talked into going AWOL by a teenage girl (also terrorist) who was actively threatening him at the time.
The covenants big bad guy trump card is a human which contradicts the entire cause of the human-covenant war.
The important UNSC characters aren’t anything like their game counterparts.
There are far too many uninteresting subplots.
The list of problems with this show is insanely large if you compare it to the canon story. If you don’t, the list is much shorter but still problematic.
The special effects were decent and the opening 10 minutes were the only decent part of the whole episode. The violence was fairly graphic, which was a pleasant surprise.
Shut off 90% of your brain, and you’ll probably enjoy it.
