Watched this when it came out, I didn't like it. I am a long time fan of the original ATLA series, having watched it a decade ago. Let me tell you, the Netflix adaptation is awful. It does not do any of the characters justice.
The only character that slightly resembles their series counterpart is Zuko, and even then, it's a slight similarity.
Whereas Katara was headstrong and bossy in the original, they made her one-dimensional - giving her absolutely NOTHING. It's a shame because I love the actress who plays Katara in the live action (Kiawentio), and she can definitely act (check her out in Anne With An E) so the fact the directing made her out to be a bad actress was sad.
Also, why can Aang fly without his glider in this adaptation??? That's literally an ancient airbender technique that only Zaheer could do in The Legend of Korra. And why is Sokka not sexist? His character development stemmed from his sexism, and they completely removed that and made him a serious character. It makes no sense!!
Suki is some warrior-girl who's practically obsessed with Sokka. They even kissed in that same episode she's introduced!!! There was no build-up! Nothing!
And why the hell is Yue able to turn into a fox and go into the Spirit World???? Like literally what does that contribute to the story-line??? This show honestly pissed me off.
Azula is emotional already in the first episode she's introduced, which makes no sense because she is supposed to be this cunning girl. You can "humanize" villains, yes, but this early on? Azula was supposed to be intimidating from the get-go; her insecurities and attributes were later revealed.
Also, Uncle Iroh is not Uncle Iroh-ing. His words of wisdom are not good. The casting is actually good, it's just the direction that ruined it. Also, they put a bunch of episodes into one whole episode to fit within the episode limit, but in that process, they completely lost the essence of the show. I hope season two will be better. Terrible.
