Great movie, Lynch takes a few fredoms, I guess Frank Hurbert didn't care for it. However, besides the weird ingredients modules, it does follow the book, for the most part. The original Kubrick Shining movie was a great movie, but completely did NOT follow the book. If given the chance there are a few different versions of this movie. Going from a short version about 1hr 50mins. To a 6hr movie. If you don't mind long movies, I'd recommend 1984s 6hr version of David Lynch's Dune. If not the 2hr. Version is good too.
