The majority of Ralph Breaks the Internet can be summed up by the ‘How do you do, fellow children’ meme. It felt as though the people behind the movie tried to appeal to the millienial crowd with what can be described as Dad jokes throughout the internet, creating a satire of the internet that has already been explored in plenty of other movies, such as people getting obsessed with getting likes on a picture or how mean people can be on the internet. The movie also suffers from constant meaningless exposition on how the internet in the movie’s universe works. Even during the climax, the movie introduces a new area in the internet that was never mentioned until that point, which is something the movie did the whole way through. Near the halfway point I even turned to my friend and said, “Man, I’m a lil’ bored.”
The movie did pick up though when the theme finally exposed itself in full. Although there are some moments of forced messages with a character yelling something along the lines of “I didn’t mean to be so selfish and so destructive in my lifestyle.” Like people actually say stuff like that. The last few moments of the movie though do invoke strong emotions as it depicts a moment every parent can relate too, as the overall motif of the movie has to deal with parenting. If you are a parent dealing with what Ralph goes through in this movie, get ready for those Disney feels.
Overall, Ralph has a couple of chuckling moments, but chooses to explore its theme rather than making a coherent internet universe that doesn’t seem forced. I liked it.
