The opening scene of the first episode sets the tone, unfortunately, for what's to come in the ensuing scenes of this show. It's done in the style of "Birdman," with one continuous long take moving through various locales of the studio at a dizzying pace. It's a gimmick, and it's distracting. This style of filmmaking has been done many times, and it always ends up detracting from the plot rather than enhancing it. Yet another distraction can be found in the show's soundtrack, a constant rattle of jazz drum beats and quirky songs. It all undermines what otherwise might be great viewing. Ironically, "The Studio" suffers from a showrunner's particular vision born out of a need to dazzle rather than enlighten, which is all too common in the Hollywood studio system.
