I enjoyed the youthful energy of it, the characters and plot. But it seemed to me the author forced an ending that served no purpose. In my day it was called a deus ex machina. The story would have ended perfectly for me, when Hazel discovers her mother embarked on an adult learning course. With that, all the important elements are resolved. Good read.
