This was just an average MCU origins story, rather unworthy of the politics drummed up around it. Action and special effects are on point, as per usual of an MCU film. The sound track, minus the painfully obvious insertion of No Doubt's 'Just a Girl', was enjoyable. Brie Larson was a mixed bag in this role, being more likable in the first act than the subsequent acts to follow. Her character flexes between being too serious and trying to be a wisecrack. Larson is surely reaching for something deeper than what is in the script, but never delivers on the feels in the same way some of her lesser known co-stars manage to. Something in her physicality leaves the viewer uncertain if she was the best choice for the role. The absence of a challenging villain is a little dull. The film's greatest flaw is the mystery and competence the script takes away from Nick Fury, despite Jackson giving a great performance.
