Reading some of the reviews, it’s apparent that many people don’t understand that the film is only at one level about the story of a man transitioning to be a woman. Rather, I think the film is about each of the core characters seeking to live their authentic lives. The opening sequence is about a gifted lawyer not pursuing her own ambitions and working for someone less qualified. She’s released to live her true ambition by the opportunity to help Manitas. And so on, for each of the main characters. When viewed through this lens, everything—even the musical sequences (often whispered because they are about secrets)—takes on greater weight. The sum of these stories forces us to question our choices—and far from being “woke,” as some idiotas who have written reviews here, this essence of the film is the oldest story in humanity: who are each of us, really, and is that the person we present to the world?
