This movie had quite a few layers and you can tell by reading other reviews, what layer the reviewer is writing about. On the surface it’s a lower production film that follows a typical wealthy modern American family as secrets are revealed proceeding the untimely death of the patriarch. Layers below that story line explore the human condition - ethics vs. morality, good vs. evil, nature vs. nurture. The game of chess is featured in multiple scenes, nodding to life as a game of chess and the characters discuss how in chess you have to think about the rewards or consequences of how the move you make now impacts your position and choices 10 moves later. The main characters battle with a series of choices to outmaneuver each other to ultimately get what they want. Power and control is what they all seek.
