The Shamalan twist at the end was so stupid. Mae spent the entire time wishing she could stay with the family. She’s an incredibly traumatized person from an incredibly abusive background and these were the first people who had been kind to her. Ever. She wanted to be with them so strongly that she even prayed to her god about it. It’s clear throughout the series that her version of Luciferian worship does not harm anyone, and I ever felt happy for her ability to pray in her circumstances. Why suddenly treat her altar with such suspicion at the end? What was the reason? It doesn’t make any sense to me that she would cause the ending. But if she did? Those aren’t the actions of a person with malicious intent. They’re the actions of a religiously brainwashed child whose birth family told her she needed to die, and whose de facto foster family decided they hated her all of a sudden. I’m incredibly angry as someone with familial and religious trauma. I guess it was on me for getting my hopes up for a good story?
