The movie was bad.
The dad and the beginning of the movie knew about the creature and was discussing how to hunt it, but yet later on, in the film you would have figured the house would have been booby-trapped or barricaded better to keep creatures like this out. And there would have been weapons. Guns or bear traps at easier disposal.
And why was the main line of communication? The CB found in a box underneath the workbench.
