SPOILERS
Not worth the watch time. The movie is filled with details that pretend to be important, only to never be connected to the conclusion. Why did the hands free faucet get so much attention? Why did Summer's tattoo exist? I still don't understand the paint clue or the pastor discussion. Why were there bitemarks on her hands? I could go on. Maybe there are coherent answers, but when the movie is this spread out and convoluted, I just don't care to do that audience detective work anymore, the payoff isn't there.
There were decisions to increase darkness feel that didn't have substance behind it. If Eli really was trying to communicate the info on the flash drive to Tom, why sneak in through the backyard at night? Why was Summer killed so sloppily by what we later learn are organized criminals? Wouldn't they have been at least a tiny bit more careful? Why would those same organized criminals not have disposed of the car that is established as one of the few pieces of hard evidence? Especially when the evidence is established BY those criminals in front of a cop who they know is not in on the scam. Oh, then have a party with that same group at the house that's holding the car, with the car just under a tarp. A lot of the character competence is ultimately undermined for the sake of adding dramatic effect, but the audience can see through it.
There's so many suspects that even if you did correctly guess the answer, it feels like it'd be more luck than wit. Further, I understand the stylistic choice of making every character mysterious and sketchy, but it does make the movie have zero levity which is hard to pull off for 2 hours and 16 minutes straight.
The conclusion is nowhere near worth the wait. All these red herrings and an unnecessary dream scare just for the answer to be a small time drug scam in suburbia enabled by corrupt cops. I mean it's just not an interesting or new idea. I feel like you could have given me this same information in 20 minutes and it would have the same payoff.
For what it's worth, the acting by Del Toro was fantastic. Shame it was wasted on such a boring and drawn out plot. I also think the cinematography was great, I'm all about slow burns with tension building shots, but they have to be in a context that draws me into the suspense, not waiting for them to get on with the resolution. As far as the supporting cast goes, acting felt mostly underwhelming, I do think Alicia Silverstone did great though. I don't even know if Justin Timberlake acted well because his character was a vanilla robot programmed to only spout out one word answers.
