Saw this last night, I'll avoid any spoilers. Firstly I'm a big fan of Scorsese and DeNiro, they are both my favourite director and actor, I'm also a big fan of DiCaprio but I have to admit, I think they flopped a bit with this one. It was simply ok, theres a decent story line in there somewhere but it was far too drawn out as others have said, I can deal with long movies, but much like The Irishman sometimes films are just long for the sake of being long, this was one of those, it could easily be a 2.5 hour film.
The film was just such a slow pace, lots of mundane scenes that don't really show anything, drawn out dialogue, it just fell flat and towards the end I was just hoping it would hurry up and end. It was lacking action, and when the action did come it was like it was quickly glossed over then back to the mundane stuff. I feel they could have made more of those scenes or shown us more. As much as I love DeNiro I feel this time he was just cast because he is friends with Scorsese, I couldn't really take him seriously with his accent and I feel the character would have been better by someone else. Even DiCaprio was a bit hit and miss, It was like he was playing someone he's played before, it just didn't feel fully authentic, you couldn't immerse yourself into the film. I think it's time to add some new faces to the screen, Gladstone was a believable character, maybe just because I haven't seen her before and she is Native American, but she didn't seem to have much dialogue. Not one of Scorsese best films, I probably won't ever watch it again, like I said there was an interesting story in there somewhere but it missed the mark and was drawn out for drawn out sake.
