This documentary isn't a typical Brubeck jazz concert (which would be amazing). It's so much more--extremely touching, moving, and powerful. Music has the power to unite people from all walks of life. Not only was Brubeck an incredible jazz musician, he composed the sacred mass in this documentary, To Hope!, which was performed with the Russian National Orchestra during a rocky and transitional time in that country. To see Brubeck bringing so much joy, hope, and love to people who intensely loved jazz--especially his jazz, which had been banned in their country just a few years before, was moving. I loved Dave Brubeck and his music before, but this documentary reveals the depths of the heart of an amazing man who touched so many lives through his music. This documentary is inspiring me to learn about Brubeck's other jazz/classical hybrid choral and orchestral pieces he has written, especially Gates of Justice.
