My partner and I felt overall, the film was not as powerful as we expected it to be, and left the cinema quite underwhelmed once the film was over. We loved the first half of the movie - the scenes of action that followed Riri and the Wakandan’s in the city, showcasing the new tech, and especially the tribute scenes to King T’Challa and Chadwick Boseman in the opening minutes.
However, we felt that the movie dropped off significantly in pace and heartfelt moments when the villain, Namor, was introduced, and dropped off further as the movie progressed and he was shown in action scenes and battles. And the last battle of the movie felt quite rushed.
I think the movie would have benefitted greatly from having a longer tribute to the King of Wakanda, more introductory screen time which showcased Riri Williams’ technological prowess and built up more of her story, as well as more screen time to build up Shuri’s story of inventive progress and overcoming of the losses she had suffered. I think Namor should have been introduced more towards the end - perhaps even attacking Wakanda as his big intro at the end of the film - finishing the film with the Wakandans feeling yet another heavy loss as the film concludes, leaving Namor to be brought down in a later film once more characters have joined forces and had the time to have great quality stories built-up on screen.
I wish it was different, and I expected so much more for this movie. Unfortunately, I can’t see myself re watching this in the future - which is not something a want to say for movies produced by my favourite film studio. The pressure to get these movies right must be incredibly high for the directors and their team; however, I think it’s important to remember quality over quantity. However, this is just my personal opinion. I’m sure that many other viewers felt that this film was done perfectly.
