Absolutely Appalling! I genuinely think it takes a special talent to get so many things wrong in one movie. I'll start with the minor issues without spoilers.
First there's the utterly ridiculous depiction of April. I mean, was that really necessary? If you want a black body positive female lead, please; by all means make one! But changing an already established and beloved character will only have the opposite effect and actually incite hate and controversy.
Issue number two. Yeah, it's cool to see a pop culture reference in a movie. But as with everything that's good, overdoing it only makes things worse. This honestly felt like a quiz than a movie.
Three, the comedy. There were a good number of jokes that made me laugh out loud, so I'd like to say it's one of this movie's strong suits. But it was hit or miss and missed more often than not.
Okay, now we're getting into spoiler territory. Please stop here if you haven't watched the movie.
My biggest complain about this movie is how it got almost everything wrong. Like the whole 'Ninja' part comes from master splinter being an actual ninja before getting mutated. But no... all the mutants had to be animals to facilitate their propaganda. So they make them learn ninjutsu from a DVD instead. Yeah... that makes sense.
What happened to the backstories of all the human characters who got mutated? Out the window! What about the turtles? Did they at least get them right? Hell no! Don sounds like a child, Leo's a geek, Ralph worries about being sympathetic, Mikey's reasonable.
The only positive I can give this is the art direction. It truly was a feast for the eyes, but that isn't enough to salvage this.
Verdict: If you loved TMNT growing up like myself, please don't watch this pile of sewage. The Nickelodeon adaptation was worlds better.
