There is not enough time in all of existence to properly chronicle the failings of this film and trilogy. I could write forever about it. Suffice to say, this film, significantly more than the 2 before it, undoes the whole of Star Wars. It makes meaningless every meaningful thing in the first two trilogies. This film pays no credence to the work of George Lucas. It’s as though the makers of this movie had never seen Star Wars. Instead of paying homage to the series, which could have culminated in a wonderful summation for the greatest story ever told, Disney decided to ignore and write over it. Simpletons like this movie. This Star Wars movie is a movie for people who cheer at explosions, not for people who like Star Wars. Sure, they made sure to bring back old characters to use as token endorsements of this new direction, but their presence was hollow, vapid, ill-implemented, and wholly unmoving. It was a despicable tactic.
If you like this movie you didn’t like Star Wars before, as it effectively unmakes everything that precedes it. I can’t sleep at night because this movie exists. You cannot simultaneously like this movie and be a Star Wars fan, because this film carelessly rides roughshod over anything of importance from the earlier films. It wasn’t written ahead of time, it was still being written during production, the characters sucked, were unredeeming and basic, the actors didn’t even know who their characters were because the film was constantly changing during production, the film makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE about 80% of the time, it’s full of plot holes and poorly implemented devices whose existence only makes sense because they’re convenient for the plot, the film doesn’t answer any questions (“somehow… palpatine has returned” I mean come on, are you joking?), it directly clashes with the first six films, and most of the film is spent retconning the one that came before it so there’s no forward momentum. This film makes the life of Anakin Skywalker & Darth Vader, the chosen one, completely inconsequential. If you liked this film you should feel like a complete fool. Episode 9 was a shallow, ill-conceived money grab that *unmakes* episode 1-8 I would literally give up my life and soul to make it so that this film never existed. In conclusion, if you like this film you are not a fan of Star Wars, in fact your allegiance lies with the entity directly opposing our formerly beloved franchise.
