Like everyone‘s said, the animation is honestly, truly groundbreaking. It had me constantly looking forward to see what could possibly be done next, and constantly getting my expectations surpassed with the episodes like “ZIMA BLUE,” “GOOD HUNTING,” and, unfortunately, “THE WITNESS.”
Which is why the amount of gratuitous sexual violence in what feels like every other episode is so upsetting. A woman gets gored through the skull during foreplay. A woman gets chased through the streets wearing nothing but a bathrobe. A woman is drugged, her entire body is amputated and replaced with robotics (while she’s conscious and screaming), and she is raped over a period of months. A naked women is bound and killed for a ritual and left with her breasts and entrails just... hanging. I could go on. But this is supposed to be empowering, because the women get their “revenge” in the end. (Except for the last one, whose appearance in the episode was hardly even warranted.)
I think in this series of 18 mini-episodes, there are 5 or 6 episodes where women are present, speaking, and not used for sexual gratification, then die horribly. Opposed to the 14 where men are a part of the main plot and don’t face sexual violence. And some of these instances could have been written out so easily, but apparently it’s supposed to be calling attention to sexual assault? Well, yeah, attention is being called to it. But associating sex with violence with women isn’t a very good thing to do, says Pavlov’s dog.
All in all, I will be watching Volume 2, because the animation and the individual plots are stellar. There are some episodes that fell short, but for the most part I was captivated. Except for the gaping problem above, it was a really unique show.
