Honestly found this series had a very slow start and I nearly gave up on the series because of that plus the frustration of seeing Australian characters once again being portrayed as quirky, zany, weird buffoon types and mildly menacing in the barren dry lands of the Outback. Cue rolling the eyes skyward.
A cast with some recognisable actors to then be upstaged by an Irish actor, the rugged, bearded, affable Jamie Dornan.
I liked seeing the two lead female characters of Luci and Prob Const Helen played respectively by Shalom Brune-Franklin and Danielle Macdonald. They were a nice juxaposition of light and shade to Jamie’s The Man character.
I liked Luci being this mysterious wild child rough round the edges woman but I also adored how Helen had this softness and naive outook at the beginning but by the end was made emboldened by her newfound freedom and self determined choices.
The ending was strong too with another female character revealing her story that is almost out of place because of how confronting and serious her storyline - but that leads the viewer to those ‘aha’ moments as well; ties all the loose ends together as the series is heavy on flashback sequences.
At times it felt like the writers couldn’t make up their minds if the series should be straight drama or dramedy.
I felt the humour was quite forced and awkward at times and Helen apologising and being meek and mild as a newly fledged cop unconvincing and bit contrived. The cowboy hatted villian is very believable in his role, with his acts of violence not being likeable at all and had the suitable ‘ick’ factor. This series won’t be everyone’s cup of tea I predict but it did hold my attention.
