I loved this movie, hands down. It was genuine, a lil scary, beautifully animated and kept me close to the action.
Disclaimer:
In saying that, reading other reviews, parents need to understand that this movie is not intended for young (~<10) audiences, it has violence (albeit the same as on TV shows), some coarse language (imo: not even that bad) and deals with some topics (like death and mortality) that dan scare young children. Where I’m from this movie is rated PG, for parental guidance for those under 15 years, i.e. those who are under 15 may not be comfortable with it. Your children are not the intended audience. Just because its animated doesn’t mean its for kids. Please take that into consideration when watching, (pre-watch it without your kids if you want to) and writing your review
With that large disclaimer out of the way:
Spider-Verse like animation was incredible, modern vibrant cgi mixed with artistic frame rate drop for crisp action and comic-like movement lines make this such eye-candy compared to the years of photo-realistic cgi. I thought there may have been too many characters, but they all add something to the movie that I dont think would be there without them, and everyone still gets their own character development. The VILLAINS, omg, death is so scary and brutal, and his whistle is amazing, in general the cinematography is phenomenal. Its so refreshing to have a genuinely I likeable villain too in Jack Horner, you’re not supposed to like him, he’s a villain for gods sake, he’s annoying irredeemable and greedy, as he needs to be, and it makes his defeat all the more impactful. I liked the morals as well, confronting your mortality, finding your own family (not bound by familial ties) and learning to overcome anxiety and fear.
Of course, I loved Puss and kitty, their dynamic was great albeit a lil confusing given the time skip. Perrito was my favourite, I thought he was going to be the comic relief, which he was a bit, but in a few scenes it was just so genuine, like how Perrito actually got to be a therapy dog for puss, calming him down by the tree and talking to him, something he wanted to be, could’ve been played for laughs, wasn’t, and it makes the movie feel real.
Loved this movie so much, but that’s just me. I don’t own the opinions of the world :)
