Hollow and disappointing.
This version offers excellent cinematography but falls short in so many other respects. It diminishes the feeling of the sisterhood and comradery of the March girls and the constant flashbacks were jarring and took away necessary context for the girls actions as adults. We don't get to grow up with the girls as we do in other more endearing film renditions (Little Women ‘94).
While Florence Pugh delivered a good performance as adult Amy, the choice to use her to depict a 12 year child was ridiculous and unsettling. Other casting and costume choices detracted from the film, as well. The March family was famously poor, but in this film everyone and everything looked too young and too pretty- i.e Chalamet as Laurie and Garrel as the professor who spoke with a FRENCH accent even though his character is supposed to be GERMAN!
So many reviews of this film that I’ve seen are overwhelmingly positive, but this version felt like a cosplay to me. It did not feel like a believable story about real people.
