I just watched it last night, it was a welcomed surprise that a rom-com had that nice balance between comedy and actual feels. I couldn't stop laughing and smiling throughout the whole movie, its that fun to watch it.
Its absurdity and its raunchy Seth Rogen-esque feel to this movie is a nice contrast with its very human-feeling dialogue. I don't know why, but it just feels real and relatable. It has this warm-inviting feel that is perfect when you just wanna watch a movie and relax after a long work-day. It's perfect when you're tired and just need some damn me-time. It's a predictable rom-com flick, but it doesn't mean it didn't serve its purpose well and build upon it.
I admit some of its political inaccuracy and dumb-downed nature of its dialogue are not for everybody, but I think it has a reason for it being like that and it didn't matter that much anyway. I think it has a symbolic meaning concerning a certain plot detail in the story. Regardless of it, it's a low-pressure, low-tension movie.
Charlize Theron's acting is fantastic in this film. She's a damn good actress; brings out the realness in her character. There's this one scene where her performance just hits you right in the feels. Didn't think Charlize would fit in a rom-com, but I think it worked, her personality is perfect as a polar opposite of Seth Rogen's. Her chemistry with Seth Rogen also feels very organic and natural even though they come from very different worlds. I think they had too much fun on set lol. I cannot say this enough, their chemistry is what brings this movie together. They carried hard and they carried well.
Regarding Seth Rogen, he's pretty much being his funny and witty self. You get what you paid for to see Seth Rogen mess around and be his funny self. Some of his work here is just rib-achingly funny.
The camerawork is not too shabby too. Some shots are quite cinematic and very satisfying to watch. Others make the scene 10x as funny. The costume department also did a nice job too.
I guess there might be some drawbacks to this movie, but you just keep smiling and laughing throughout the movie so you just ignore those issues completely.
I loved the movie overall. To me, it felt human, funny and adorable. You should watch this movie.
