This could’ve gone somewhere.
(spoiler alert) The idea of humans being forced to find a habitable planet, but an alien species beating them to it is really interesting. A battle of species, technologies, and willpower would have been a great story to flesh out as a sci-fi horror film. This was not that.
“Ash” (which has no significance in the plot of this movie), proved to be nothing more than another girl boss movie where the main character is so narcissistic she gets almost everyone killed by breaking protocol because she knows best, then she murders the only person left alive, and finally defeats the alien that killed three grown men using pure willpower and rage. The movie didn’t even have a “Life” ending where she thought she killed the alien but it went with her when she escaped to the orbiting base. Nope, the horrible, selfish, thoughtless, homicidal maniac of a main character gets to fly off the planet safely while having pleasant thoughts of all the people she killed.
Can we go back to having evil characters get what they deserve? I’m happy to follow a bad guy, but it’s so hard to enjoy a movie where the bad guy gets to ride off into the sunset.
