I’d actually give this 2 and a half. The CGI in most parts were great. Songs didn’t fail to hit at most parts. I like the messages and the story of Red at the start and her acting and the vocals of everyone were great, but I have to say, I’ve never laughed so much in my life. I mean it when I say this movie was mostly a literal joke. Predictable, anticlimactic, unnecessary, weird, idealistic. only a few parts of each song were weird and they were fine to good overall, but there were a lot of cringy or silly moments, especially within the dance group outbreaks. The amount of autotune they slapped on some of their vocals held back bits of each of the songs and the music video-style shots and random group choreography ruined the performance, especially (spoilers) the Queen’s guards breaking out in dance when they were suppose to be looking out for the culprit.
The wigs were funky too, and the outfits did not hit. They’re all just blocks of one bright colour. I’m in too deep though so I guess I’m going to have to watch the next one, perhaps it’ll be as funny as this. The only moment I truly enjoyed was the acknowledgment of Cameron Boyce, I didn’t expect to cry when watching this, I’m glad they paid him homage. I just wish the movie was a bit more serious and I wish the plot had more sense and felt a bit more real.
(SPOILERS)
A summary of the disappointing parts of the plot since it won’t let me post my absolutely massive essay. I think I exceeded the word count:
• Bits resembling HP Cursed Child Plot
• Transformation of QOH uncanny
• Coup of high school = Leader of Auradon??
• No guards or military or knights??
• VKs actually got through the swords and Merlin and the book hex pre-Red??
• Morgana to Uliana?
• Ella and Charming met at CastleComing
• Everyone either lives in the same geographical location or is special enough to come to the same school
• Everything being normal after they return except for the QOH being nice. The tiniest alter in the past can transform multiple lifetimes and the whole course of history, so after the HUGE amount of interfering from Red and Chloe, why is everything still EXACTLY the same except her mother?!
Perhaps a cliffhanger alongside the famous “You didn’t think the story ends” line would’ve been a better pathway to the fifth movie instead of a dance party. Also, questions: How did Chloe change her clothes back in the past and during the garden song, why was her wig so long and the curls more loose? Also, why is Merlin not the powerful wizard he is and also, I wish the casting was a bit more seamless within the storyline cause why did Chad and Chloe not inherit ANY of their parents features. They look adopted. Also Hades in a school with everyone else, a bunch of humans up on Earth? I’d love the post my whole essay with detail on all my points and share more of my points but I can’t, unfortunately.
