Parts of this film (the acting and atmosphere) were magnificent, truly!
However, if you're the type of person that wants a plot to make sense don't watch this movie. Also, if racism as part of the script that seems to be there exclusively to show that the main characters are accepting of it...
My theory is that this was written with a completely different ending that honored the homogeneous past and articulated the difficulties of how to move forward, but the intended audience would have taken it defensively and it wouldn't be the feel good flick it wanted to be.
A lot of opportunities were missed as a result. The first half set up a huge amount of possibilities and I think if done correctly a large audience could have fallen in love with any way it decided to unfold. As is tho, it appeals mostly to the "have kids/raise a family and gossip about the neighbors, is what I'm on earth to do" crowd, which is totally fine!
