Re: Alex Manguel’s review notes.
That was not an orphanage the young boy was forced to stay at after he was captured. It was an Indian Residential School. How can you expect to find a happy ending in a movie that details the horrific treatment those poor young souls endured at the hands of monsters. The account of their experiences is very well documented and attested to by survivors of a system designed to exclusively “kill the native in the child”!
Disturbing movie to watch, but important to do so. It’s a very good look, even if it is a partial one, at what happened to those innocent children forced into the Residential School System.
And then ending is not sombre, the young man does rise above what he experienced, and goes home! I was left with a feeling of hope for him and any other adult who struggles with similar experiences and choose not to allow them to define who they are.
A must see, 5 stars!
