Just finished this book - 'You Don't Have To Be Mad To Work Here'. One of the very good ones that I have ever read.
A narrative by a psychiatrist in London Dr Benji Waterhouse, it tells you of so many things -
- that, psychiatry is still a developing branch of medical science but perhaps the most important for the modern age.
- that, it is still not taken seriously by even the medical fraternity itself
- that, it requires a doctor to have empathy besides competence
- that, there is a very fine line separating normal from abnormal
- that, it's the chemicals in our brain that drive our behaviour; but the environment has a lot to do too
- that almost all believe that they can't have mental health issues
- that, ultimately all countries (India in my context ) have the same overburdened medical system where doctors fight for resources and a bit of sleep for themselves.
- that, psychiatrist themselves need counselling as they plod through their profession.
A brilliantly funny but deadly serious account. A must read for everyone.
