For 1990, I loved this movie for its incredible visual style, characters, setting, and I was a boy so... y'know, loved the whole cops and robbers schtick.
The cast is insane. We had Madonna at her peak, Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, and others. Really the cast is 10/10.
The story is kinda whatever, it has a good ending I thought, but really the styles and visuals are what makes this movie fun. It really focuses on broad colors and surreal backdrops. The blue screen effect for the city and scenes was really well done, only once was it very apparent they were in front of a blue screen.
How does the movie hold up in 2024? Well, I think it honestly needs a remaster. I think the vision was there and while the execution was flawless, they didn't have the technology or tricks we have today that can really sell us on how bizarre these characters look and creating a surreal, crime ridden metropolis. Could make tweak the story a bit, but not too much.
As part of my tradition, I like to define what a good movie is by if it is better than Beethoven, the dog movie. Why? Because Beethoven was enjoyable, engaging, knew what it was, and then ended before it got boring. Is this movie better than Beethoven? YES.
