Quiet, stoic, insightful, difficult to participate as a reader to some degree in the suffering if the main character over the course of his life in the novel. A slow burning intellectual, passive man enjoying the treasures of deep literature in a Midwestern university culture in the early to mid twentieth century. Undone by wife and treacherous colleague perhaps due to his lack of attention and response to challenges from these people in his environment. He sees, but never challenges.
