Interesting concept, but it fell flat.
*SPOILERS*
Found myself questioning details throughout the movie, such as the suggested sexual trauma and the corset, which didn’t seem to fit and were never connected with anything else later on. The reveal of the whole witch aspect turned the story entirely. Jane Doe’s powers were ambiguous and too plot-supportive. What was the whole point of the father and son discovering the big secret behind her identity and turning back to “do the right thing” in giving her peace, only to be killed off anyway? Particularly in the case of the father’s sacrifice through taking her wounds. Why and how, then, did she regenerate, especially just to kill the son anyway? Is the implication that the witch is slowly coming back to life with every victim that she claims? I have to assume that’s what the writer intended, but it’s a bold assumption. I’m fine with reading into movies and having to extract underlying story points and suggested events-to-come, but there was such little information on these matters that it feels like a stretch and a disservice to the audience to not give even a bit more to go on here.
Not to mention the ending, which is the most lackluster part of all. A basic jumpscare followed by a quick, bland death caps off this underwhelming film in an unsatisfying yet fitting manner.
Overall, this movie pretends to be a smart, cool, and unique horror story, but it doesn’t hold up under the most average level of scrutiny.
5/10 - would only recommend if you’re REALLY into autopsies and/or can only handle diet horror.
