I know it says 5 star, but I only gave it that so people actually see the review. this is more of a 3.5 imo
first, the positives. the plot is very good, it follows the story of Jann Mardenborough, a sim racer who has always wanted to race, but never got to. that is until he would be given chance by Nissan and gran turismo. He would win, leading to him going on to become a professional racing driver. and the best part of this story by far is that it happened to a real person, albeit not exactly how its shown on screen, but still.
secondly, the cars. i was surprised with the amount of cars that appeared in the movie, including a ford gt mk2, a number of actually relevant gt3 cars, and even freaking Koenigsegg (which shocked me since they arent in gt) they even had a Vw corrado. granted, its not flawless, but its clear they did the best they could with the budget they had, you have to respect it
now the negatives. they didnt actually get to visit nearly as many tracks as they wanted to, which lead to them crutching the Hungary Gp circuit for alot of these shots. however they didnt do the best of jobs into gaslighting us into thinking that they werent just at Hungary. i mean the amount of times theyll say something like "Silverstone, Uk" just to show an overhead shot of an unedited Hungary gp circuit is hilarious. im sure they tried their best but its hard to ignore. what makes it worse is when they use cgi which leads me to the next flaw
the cgi. first of all, they used WAYYY to much cgi. like, way to much. for racing movies, ill always be an advocate for practical sfx if and when possible. however if you need cgi, at least make it look realistic. well, they didnt, you can literally ALWAYS tell when a shot has CGI in it, it legit never looks good. I remember at le mans when they decided to CGI basically the entire track, it looked horrible. it took away from alot of the coolness of the situation just by the fact that it looked so glaringly fake. the cars also move weird during cgi scenes as well. Id almost have preferred them to just use the dam game for these shots 💀 alot of shots are sped up with cgi very clearly, especially when they have gt3 cars cornering like f1 cars.
next up is acting, which isnt horrible. some characters actually have good acting, but theyre usually not even in the movie for long, such as his parents for instance. then theres the main character, and idk, something about him just didnt do it for me. he just didnt do a good enough job selling the emotion of the role in my opinion.
theres also some issues with pacing, leaving some plotlines just completly out. his love interest is on screen for less than 5 minutes, which gives it no weight when they get together. also, the racing itself has weird pacing. they do a very poor job of explaining what happens what which makes you wonder if he actually just passed 10 people on the last 3 laps of le mans of if that was over an entire hour
that being said, the movie is STILL fun. granted these issues are hard to ignore, but its still a fun movie. its not one of those "ew you like that movie" but its more of a "if this is the best movie you've ever seen you need to watch more movies
