I have viewed this film many times...
It was shown as the last movie at Italian Film Festival, Melbourne many years ago...left the cinema wiping away tears
{Most recently shown on SBS Australia.. thankyou people at network.}
The film is a playwright's gem..
Based on Eduardo De Filippo's play Filumena Marturano, directed by De Sica and as its main protagonists Sophia Loren ( Filumena Marturano) and Marcello Mastroianni (Domenico {Don Dumme'} Soriano)...the story is about Italy's post- war golden age and about passion and commitment by individuals who survived WW2 by any means possible.
With Naples as its backdrop, the story evolves through flashbacks to the current day in the lives of Filomena and Domenico...laughter, drama and tears.
I always feel like I'm watching my parents there on the screen. If you have an inkling of sentiment you cannot avoid shedding a tear with Filumena at film's end.
