Some of the replication of certain scenes were nice but the production felt like a kids’ television production quality in terms of the pacing and acting felt too forced, not authentic or rushed. Disney clearly didn’t put much love into Pinnochio and treated it as a quick themed show rather than an epic drama full of sincerely deep emotions both heart warming and devastating and uncomfortable as it was in the original animated feature.
Tom Hanks did the most to contribute to the poetic emotional acting the story so seriously needed. The best acting and drawn out emotion was only at the very end and very beggining, which was needed most in the donkey/Pleasure Island part of the story.
Pinnochio’s animations were jerky and fast when it needed to be dynamic and fluid the way cell animation brought him to life. Pinnochio is one of my favorite Disney classics, but I think Pixar would have done this reboot more justice due to its emotional and deep adult topics of child abduction, exploitation, sacrifice, life or death of a parent or child, and love and solid integrity. Pinnochio’s face design looks a bit flat and dry too… needed more of his original expressive face design. Also the end seemed like it didnt even tie the lose ends with the new character added into this rendition as well as show Pinnochio’s dramatic transformation into a real boy so Geppetto and Pinnochio can finally rejoice as a family.
Disney’s animation quality is a given as well as polished feel but I expected better directing and storytelling next time. It felt like an awkward revival of a once great 40’s classic made trivial when translates to the modern age. It felt like a nice tour ride version of the film meant for a 15 min experience. It was ok but not for Disney’s feature film standards. This was ok for a ride or a single TV episode special.
