I’d been meaning to try this show for weeks but kept forgetting to get around to it. Finally, this week I started it, have binged my way through in just a few days, and having just finished it I am sorry I blew through it so quickly cause now I want more!
Clever, funny, suspenseful, very well cast—I didn’t expect all those attributes but they are there in spades. I’ve always liked Alan Tudyk but have only seen him in ensemble pieces like Death at a Funeral or Suburgatory. It was worth the wait for him to get this lead role cause HE IS CRUSHING IT! I can’t think of anyone else who could have been a better choice as the alien who (hilariously) tries to fit in with the Colorado folk in the small town where his spaceship has crashed. We learn early on that he’s been sent to Earth on a not-so-nice mission and is stranded until he can find and reassemble the missing parts of his ship.
Oddly, this show kept reminding me of two of my other favorite recent shows: Dead To Me, because it combines edgy comedy, drama and suspense in a surprisingly satisfying way; and Schitt’s Creek, where a small town full of oddballs and misfits each get enough screen time to make us understand and care about them in the course of 10 episodes.
It may not be for everyone, but if you watch the pilot you’ll know by the end if it’s right for you.
I think it’s great—you should give it a try.
