The only thing I liked about this live action was Prince Eric, I thought his acting and looks were just like my childhood self pictured him. Everything else was absolutely NOT IT.
Starting off with Ariel, it is not about representation rather what I and many saw her as growing up with the cartoon version. Sadly, in show biz, many talented actors/actresses can not get the role since they do not look like the character. It is just how it works, not racism. Halle has a stunning voice but she doesn’t look like what I thought Ariel as. Again, for representation, Disney should create new stories not change old ones. I am not saying this to be racist either, I don’t think Halle is as beautiful as what I imagined Ariel, and I am saying this as an Indian girl who grew up in America. For me, I would rather see stories being how I saw they were when I was younger. I don’t care too much about representation, as long as they create new stories.
The story line itself was so boring and we were about to walk out at least four times during the film. I never felt this in the cartoon version so I’m just wondering why it was this boring.
But worst of all was not just the representation for Ariel, it was the fact that everyone seemed Black when the original story is in the Sea of Denmark or around this area. DO NOT CHANGE THE OG. Literally everyone in the town was either black, asian, and it was hard to find white people. This is taking representation to an extreme level. All I’m asking is make a new version with representation for Black people or Asians. Just I’m begging Disney, pls, pls, pls don’t change the original or the cast we saw them as.
This being said, I hope the Percy Jackson show doesn’t turn out a flop especially with the terrible Annabeth casting. Like I don’t care how well she acts, she isn’t my Annabeth. She isn’t at all what I pictured her to be.
Stop this nonsense now.
