I generally dont write review, but this one pushed me to give one and its sad that i has to be a negative review.
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!...
The Story:
A terminally ill soon to die woman "Sam" who has lost all hope gets stuck in the Big apple, when sound sensitive, aromored aliens attack. She has to survive until she gets to eat a slice of pizza from a shop she and her dad used to visit for her last taste of nostalgia. She picks up a random british guy on the way. The journey to the place makes up the course of the film and her last sacrifice to save the brit and her cat frodo makes up the mandatory climax.
The Good:
1. Obviously Lupita Nyong'o, she played the part perfectly. I can't imagine anyone else in that role.
That's about it, everything else is just plain boring.
The Bad:
1. Bad Writing - From the start, the writing is just too convenient. The Terminally ill patient, the cat making absloutely no noise, the aliens inability to swim, the world being too quiet?? Come on. By making the protaganist a terminally ill person, there was no objective for the her, nothing for her to fight or anything to root for. The british guy is just there as a filler, he just shows up arbitrarily and tags along for no good reason. There was no meaningful interaction between them to establish any chemsitry between them. At one time, she says that evacuation is in the other way and implies that if he follows her, it will be certain death, inspite of this he follows her. Why?..is he suicidal?..if so what is his backstory?..Why should the viewer care for him?...He says he is a lawyer and has family in england, they why does he follow her instead of going to the evacuation boat?...No answers there...At her place he sees a poetry book written by her, he asks if she wrote it, So had he read the book earlier and got inspired?..No Answer..The film's name is "A Quiet Place", So there is very little dialogue to convey any conversation, so most things have to be conveyed through emotions, there in lies the problem, because in earlier films, it was all about the Abbot family, meaning we know the connections from the opening scene itself. But, by connecting totally unrelated characters, the writers boxed themselves into a corner. On the contrary, the character of the nurse "Reuben" is established in the opening moments and the bond he shares with sam is also fleshed out, but he gets killed off pretty early. If the journey for the pizza was by sam and the nurse, it would have made a lot more sense. And speaking of pizza, can't they think of any other goal, that too when the world is ending.
2. The Aliens - I feel with every film, the aliens are becoming more and more dumb and less scary. Even when i watched the first film, there were huge potholes in logic and I was like, these aliens could be easily distracted. Then the second film, showed that they could not swim and i was like, then the navy would have been fine to take care of these aliens and then this film showed that they are not good runners too. A terminally ill person easily outruns the aliens in this film.
3. The Cat - This cat has 9 lives and always comes back to move the plot forward. Always at the right place and never mews or makes a sound and has far too many scenes and vanishes when he is isnt needed.
