We were in China in 1985 and were told of the social pressures exerted by the government down to the village level. Women were watched and their periods monitored by their neighbors who looked for sanitary supplies and other evidence. Many fetuses, especially girls, were drowned and abandoned. People were starving and unable to feed their families. Placing children with parents outside the country may be seen as one humane solution to the population problem.
