Gotta be one of the greatest and most iconic movies ever. Of course there’s Lugosi’s famous portrayal of Dracula, but Frye’s Renfield is nearly just as great. All the characters are very well developed and the atmosphere, performances, and the bit of comedic relief all manage to be timeless and iconic, even over 90 years later. Also for the time period and considering the budget of the movie, the sets and filming are incredibly good. There is no music in the movie besides the credits and the opera scene, but I personally think this adds to the haunting-ness of the film and helps to bring out the amazing acting. It also strays from Bram Stoker’s novel quite a bit, which is mostly due to cultural differences between the time periods (when the book was written and when the movie was released), and likely the fact that the novel has a fairly complex plot, which couldn’t all be done in the movie. Really, it’s more based on the Dracula play than anything else. This is absolutely a must watch for anybody.
